About Estate Tax States

Radif Partners reads each state's estate and inheritance tax rules where they are published, the revenue department and the statute, and turns them into one calculator: the thirteen estate tax jurisdictions with their 2026 exemptions and tables, the five inheritance tax states by class of heir, and the federal exclusion of Public Law 119-21. Official examples, such as the Illinois Attorney General's, run as tests. We sell no planning service, ask for no e-mail and give no legal advice.

The gap this site fills

Search for "state estate tax" and the first result is a table dated 2018 that still shows a federal exemption of $11.2 million. The next ones are charts for 2025, with Washington's old exemption and New York missing, or a 2026 article that gives Connecticut's exemption as $13.6 million when the state's law ties it to the federal amount, $15,000,000 this year. Most of these pages end with a form to book a meeting with an adviser. None computes a tax.

This site does better than the first Google result because it computes the state estate tax, the federal estate tax and the inheritance tax paid by each heir on the estate you enter, with the 2026 exemptions and tables of the 13 estate tax jurisdictions and the 5 inheritance tax states read one by one on the state's law or revenue department, where the page ranked first dates from 2018 and still shows a federal exemption of $11.2 million.

Who publishes it

The site is published by Radif Partners, a company that builds calculators on public rules. It is not a law firm, an estate planner, a trust company, a bank or an insurer; it is not run by or affiliated with the IRS, any state revenue department or any government agency; it receives no commission and has no partner to send you to.

What we rely on

For the federal tax: Public Law 119-21 (govinfo.gov), Rev. Proc. 2025-32 for the 2026 amounts and the Form 706 instructions. For each state, the statute and the revenue department page or form listed on its page, for example Tax Law section 952 and the ET-706 instructions in New York, Form MET 1 in Maryland, the Attorney General's calculator notes in Illinois, ESB 6347 and the Department of Revenue tables in Washington, and KRS chapter 140 as amended in 2026 in Kentucky. All were read on October 19, 2026.

What the site leaves out

The value of the estate is yours to enter: appraisals, the valuation of a business or of a farm, and special-use valuation are not modelled. Trust drafting, probate procedure and generation-skipping transfer tax are not covered. The method page lists every rule, formula and simplification; the editorial policy explains corrections.

Figures checked on · Editorial policy · Contact

Results are estimates built on the 2026 thresholds and rates of each state and of the federal law, applied to the figures you type. They are not legal advice: the value of the estate, deductions, trusts, beneficiary designations and the domicile of the person who died are matters an estate attorney or a CPA has to establish for a real estate. We receive nothing from any law firm, bank or adviser.
